Is Practising PYQs Enough for JEE Main and NEET?

Previous year questions (PYQs) are essential, but for most students they are not enough on their own. Use PYQs to learn the exam's style and find weak chapters, then add concept revision and timed mock tests on fresh questions.

What PYQs do well

  • They show the real style and difficulty of questions, so you know what the exam expects.
  • They reveal which chapters and concepts come up again and again.
  • They give you a quick, honest check of whether you have really understood a chapter.
  • They build confidence, because you meet genuine exam questions early.

Where PYQs fall short

  • There are only so many questions per chapter, so you can run out before your concepts are solid.
  • Question styles change over the years, so old papers cannot cover every new pattern.
  • Solving chapter-wise does not train you to manage time across a full paper.
  • It is easy to remember answers instead of understanding the method.

A simple plan: PYQs + concepts + mocks

  1. Learn the chapter from your notes or textbook first.
  2. Solve that chapter's previous year questions and mark every one you got wrong or guessed.
  3. Read the step-by-step solution for each mistake and write down the idea you missed.
  4. Take a short part test on fresh questions a few days later to check the fix worked.
  5. As the exam gets closer, shift towards full-length timed mock tests and review them carefully.

How to tell if PYQs are enough for you

A useful check: if you score consistently well on a chapter's PYQs and also on unseen mixed tests of that chapter, your preparation for it is probably solid. If you do well on PYQs but drop on fresh questions, you likely need more concept practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is solving PYQs enough for NEET?
PYQs are a very good base for NEET because they show how concepts are asked, but most students also revise the syllabus thoroughly and take timed mock tests so they are ready for new questions.
How many years of PYQs should I solve?
There is no fixed number. Many students solve as many recent years as they can chapter-wise. How well you understand each mistake matters more than the count.
Should I solve PYQs before or after finishing a chapter?
After you have learned the basics. Your first attempt then works as a diagnosis, and the solutions show you what to revise.
