When Should You Start Preparing for JEE Main and NEET?
There is no single right time. Most students build their base in Class 11 and 12, many begin foundation work earlier, and droppers plan around a full year. What matters is covering the syllabus once with understanding, then revising and testing.
Class 9-10: build the foundation
Focus on strong basics in maths and science and the habit of understanding, not memorising. Reading your school textbooks well is a good start.
Class 11: build the base
Learn each chapter properly and practise chapter-wise questions. Add previous year questions once you finish a chapter so you see how the topic is asked.
Class 12: finish early, then revise and test
Try to complete the syllabus with time left for revision cycles. Start part and half syllabus tests, and move to full tests as the exam approaches.
Drop year: diagnose first
Begin by finding your weak chapters from past test results and previous year questions, then plan a year with learning, revision and regular timed tests.
Build a routine you can keep
- Plan a daily schedule you can follow on ordinary days, not only on your best day.
- Mix new learning, revision and practice every week.
- Review your mistakes regularly in an error log.
- Rest properly; steady effort beats short bursts.
Keep going
Frequently asked questions
- How much time is required to prepare for JEE Main?
- It varies by student and starting point. Instead of counting months, plan syllabus coverage, revision cycles and regular tests, and adjust based on your results.
- Can I start in Class 12?
- Yes, many students do. You will need a tighter plan: finish the syllabus early, practise previous year questions chapter-wise and take regular tests.
- Is self-study enough?
- Many students prepare well with self-study supported by good material, previous year questions, tests and a way to clear doubts. Choose what fits how you learn.
- When should I start previous year questions?
- After you have learned a chapter's basics. Solve that chapter's PYQs to check your understanding and find gaps.
