JEE · NEET Previous Year Question
In which of the following molecules, the central atom does not have sp3 hybridization?
Topic: NEET PYQ
Answer: B. Full step-by-step solution below.
- ACH4
- BSF4
- C
- D
Correct answer: B
Solution
(b) For neutral molecules,No. of electron pairs = No. of atoms bonded to it + 1/2 [Gp. no of central atom – Valency of central atom]
∴ For CH4, no. of e– pairs = = 4 (sp3 hybridisation)
For SF4, no. of e– pairs = = 5 (sp3 d hybridisation)
For ions,
No. of electron pairs = No. of atoms bonded to it + 1/2 [Gp. no. of central atom – Valency of central atom ± No. of electrons]
∴ For BF4–, no. e– pairs = = 4 (sp3 hybridisation)
For NH+4, no. of e– pairs = = 4 (sp3 hybridisation)
